Meet Godfree

I’ve lived all around the world: growing up in Australia, moving to Japan, getting my doctorate at UMass, Amherst and settling in California. After 30 years there as a butler, moving a family around the world at a moment’s notice, I set up a business in California’s Napa Valley and, 8 years later, lost it in the financial crisis. I’d been visiting Thailand since 1967 and loved it so, when I found myself with only a $1200 monthly Social Security check, I moved there.

To my delight I found that it was possible to live comfortably on that tiny budget in a beautiful environment. Which led to my first book, How to Retire in Thailand and Double Your Income (in reality, my buying power tripled when I moved to Thailand). The second book, Making Money in Thailand came from my efforts to double my cash income which, I’m happy to say, I managed within 12 months. Now I’m enjoying life more than ever….

In Thailand my Social Security check allowed me to rejoin the middle class and I am living more happily and comfortably than I ever thought possible just five years ago. But it wasn’t an easy move. I made a lot of mistakes and wasted even more time and money trying to get settled in a foreign country by myself. Now, I’ve created an invaluable network of contacts, services and shortcuts to help you retire in Chiang Mai quickly and painlessly!

Meet Khun Aom!

As a trained cultural guide and Chiang Mai native, Khun Aom – Aimie to her Western friends – knows the city like no one else. Add to that her experience as an accountant, temple dancer, professional driver and mother of two and you’ll soon realize there’s no better person to have on your side as you move to Chiang Mai. She’s also one of the funniest people you’ll ever meet.

Aimie wears many hats and wears them well. When you want to know where to find a certain shop, what to bring as a gift to a Thai wedding or how much you should pay for a new silk outfit, Aom will tell you – and accompany you herself.

She single handedly helped me build my life here in Chiang Mai and now I’m proud to have her on the Thailand Retirement Helpers team to make your move as easy – and fun – as possible.
