Often the press trips were adapted from a travel agents’ fam tour, and so the group was dragged through countless hotels, inspecting room categories and restaurant sizes. Other times they were a glorified tourist jaunt, on and off the bus with annoying tourist guides. Mostly they involved getting up really early, still jet-lagged, and going to bed late, after yet another dinner with yet another GM.

From this, somehow, we had to come up with off-beat stories complete with photographs, with one sale if we were lucky to a daily paper, maybe one to a lifestyle mag, and a business article. Little surprise that I sometimes found myself staying in a five-star resort without the money in my pocket for a cup of coffee. I came to loathe the entire business.
